Sex and religion are joined at the hip. The most interesting distinction is not between religions that say 'yes' to sex and those who say 'no' but between two aspects of a single religion, one of which regards sex as a blessing and the other as a curse.

For Many Religions, Sex Both Blessing and Curse

Many religions drive with one foot heavy on the sexual accelerator and the other riding the sexual brakes.

Judaism, Christianity and Hinduism celebrate, on the one hand, the power of sex within marriage and are keen to harness its power for their worshippers, while, on the other hand, they warn you that hair will grow on the palms of your hand if you masturbate.

Subject: HOW TO - Build your own wind turbine
Security: Public
Kagetsuki sent in this how-to on building a model vertical wind generator using household items, wire and magnets - " These plans are for the construction of a machine called a Savonius wind turbine. Wind turbines come in two general types, those whose main turning shaft is horizontal and points into the wind, and those with a vertical shaft that points up. The Savonius is an example of the vertical axis type. It consists of two simple scoops that catch the wind and cause the shaft to turn."

I also try to explain that people that write code really enjoy writing code but I've pretty much given up on that one. Unfortunately, I think most people don't believe that you can enjoy something you do for a living. They particularly don't understand that coding is not only fun but very addictive.

Why do open source software developers write code for free?

Posted by Stormy on May 16th, 2007 in Open Source

One of the things that has always fascinated me is how people do not understand why developers write code for free.   I can't tell you how many people I've explained open source software to - only to have them get stuck on the "yes, but why are these guys writing this software? Don't they have anything better to do?"  I explain that they write the software:

  • "to scratch an itch",
  • to fix a problem they've had or a problem they've seen,
  • or to create a solution for their kids.

This is a sculpture mounted on the wall in a resort called the Shiva Oasis in Behror. I was pretty impressed when I saw this sculpture, it appealed to me. Don't ask me why, but it seems nice and intricate, and visually interesting

The Photographer's Dilemma: to cooperate or not?

While this will certainly present an interesting application of the PD game, there is an even more forceful player coming into the market, if not by sheer size and image base, but because they are are migrating from being a social-networking photo-sharing site, to be being a stock licensing site. Recently, smugmug has alerted their contributor-base that they are within "weeks" of turning on a new feature that will allow licensing of photos. While smugmug has been solely a photo-sharing site for years--and a profitable one at that--it was only in the last year that sufficient push from their membership convinced them to allow them to sell/license their photos. (They had always been able to sell their photos as prints to anyone that wants to buy them.)
