Subject: Google to enhance Search Appliance with open source framework
Security: Public
With hundreds of different content management systems out in the market, Glotzbach expects that the makers of these systems in particular will welcome the framework and use it to plug their wares to the Search Appliance.

Google to enhance Search Appliance with open source framework

Framework will build on OneBox for Enterprise functionality

By Juan Carlos Perez IDG News Service

Currently, Google partners have created custom-built connectors for these types of content systems using the Search Appliance's application programming interfaces (APIs). However, the new Content Connector Framework, as it is currently known inside Google, will simplify the creation of these modules and allow them to work more effectively than current ones thanks to this common connecting platform residing in the actual Search Appliance.

It's this feeder API that the new framework will improve. "This will be evolving the feeder API into a robust architecture and framework for connecting [natively] to these types of content systems," Glotzbach said.

Glotzbach declined to say when the open source framework and the scalability improvements will be delivered.

Subject: Global net censorship 'growing'

He added: "Once filtering is begun, it is applied to a broad range of content and can be used for expanding government control of cyberspace. It has become a strategic forum of competition between states, as well as between citizens and states."

Mr Palfrey said the report was an attempt to shine a spotlight on filtering to make it more transparent.

"What's regrettable about net filtering is that almost always this is happening in the shadows. There's no place you can get an answer as a citizen from your state about how they are filtering and what is being filtered."

Global net censorship 'growing'
The study of thousands of websites across 120 Internet Service Providers found 25 of 41 countries surveyed showed evidence of content filtering.

A number of states in Europe and the US were not tested because the private sector rather than the government tends to carry out filtering, it said.

Subject: Study Of Protein Folds Offers Insight Into Metabolic Evolution
Security: Public
âœThe most ancient (protein) molecules were involved in the interconversion of nucleotides. But they were not synthesizing them,â Caetano-Anollés said. âœWe see that all the enzymes that were involved in purine synthesis, for example, were very recent. Since these first proteins benefited the formation of building blocks for the primitive RNA world, it makes a lot of sense that weâ™ve found this origin encased in nucleotide metabolism.â

Study Of Protein Folds Offers Insight Into Metabolic Evolution

âœWe are interested in how structure evolves, not how organisms evolve,â said professor of crop sciences Gustavo Caetano-Anollés, principal researcher on the study, which was co-written by graduate student Hee Shin Kim and emeritus professor of cell and developmental biology Jay E. Mittenthal. âœWe are using the techniques of phylogenetic analysis that systematicists used to build the tree of life, and we are applying it to a biochemical problem, a systems biology problem.â
